Chess is said to have originated in India more than 1600 years ago. Its origins are linked to a 4th-century game Chaturanga. Legend has it that once there was a king Balhait, who believed that war was a great way of inculcating values such as valour, decision-making, endurance and circumspection. So he requested a Sage, Sissa to invent a game based on war. It was Sage Sissa who then came up with Chaturanga, ‘Chatur’ means four and ‘Anga’ means divisions of ancient Indian armies which included - infantry, cavalry, elephantry and chariotry. The pieces which we see today in modern chessboards such as pawn, knight, bishop and rook developed from these 4 divisions.
